MASAM Project Clears Over One Million Square Meters of Yemeni Territory in August

The MASAM project for landmine clearance in Yemen has successfully neutralized 9,280 mines, unexploded ordnance, and improvised explosive devices between August 1 and August 21, marking a significant step in ongoing efforts to clear areas contaminated by Houthi-planted explosives.

According to a statement issued by the project’s operations room, the recovered items include 9,018 pieces of unexploded ordnance, 162 anti-tank mines, 48 anti-personnel mines, and 52 improvised explosive devices. These operations are critical to reducing the lethal threats posed to Yemeni civilians and facilitating the safe return of displaced residents to their homes and agricultural lands.

During the third week of August alone, MASAM teams cleared 355,679 square meters of land, successfully neutralizing 1,836 hazardous items. This weekly progress contributed to a total of 1,002,229 square meters of territory cleared throughout the first three weeks of the month, significantly enhancing safety in affected regions.

The project also highlighted its long-term impact in the Midi district of Hajjah Governorate. Since the inception of operations in that area, MASAM teams have removed 12,854 mines and explosive remnants of war. Furthermore, the project has successfully cleared 4,596,730 square meters of land in Midi, ensuring that previously hazardous zones are rendered secure for local populations and economic activity.
