Taiz Official, Armed Escort Assault Media Activist Over Social Media Criticism
Abdulaziz Al-Shaybani, the Director of Al-Shamayteen district, along with several armed escorts, allegedly subjected media activist Hisham Al-Saman to verbal and physical abuse, including threats of abduction and assassination. The incident reportedly stemmed from Al-Saman's critical opinions and social media posts.
According to Al-Saman's official complaint, the confrontation occurred at the "World of Joys" hall in Al-Dahi neighborhood, Taiz city, while he was photographing guests at a wedding. Al-Shaybani and his entourage allegedly accosted Al-Saman, attempting to forcibly remove him from the venue.
Al-Saman stated that Al-Shaybani used derogatory language and instructed his escorts to drag him outside for an assault. Al-Saman reportedly attempted to de-escalate the situation, citing the sanctity of the social occasion and his professional critique of public services, street conditions, and cleanliness, which he maintained did not infringe on personal matters.
The threats reportedly continued until Al-Shaybani's departure from the hall. He allegedly vowed to have Al-Saman illegally arrested, claiming that his activities were monitored and that subordinates were eager to apprehend him. Al-Shaybani reportedly asserted that Al-Saman's file was prepared and his publications were under surveillance.
Following the incident, Al-Saman filed a formal report with the Criminal Investigation Department in Taiz, documenting the threats and holding Al-Shaybani fully responsible for his safety. This event occurs amidst growing human rights concerns regarding the continued suppression of free speech advocates and journalists in Taiz Governorate, which is under the control of security and military forces affiliated with the Islah party (Muslim Brotherhood), and the alleged use of influence and armed displays to settle scores following criticism of governmental and institutional performance.
